Keep mice out of your home

Many homeowners struggle with mice. Mice are crafty at finding ways to food and shelter. They can warp their little bodies to squeeze through the smallest holes. How do you stop mice from entering your home?

The first thing you need to look at is your exterior. Is there a pathway for entry for these tiny little buggers? If so, then you need to remediate the issue.

What are some problem areas?

The first one I will talk about is trees overhanging or near the roof. If a mouse can get from a tree to your house it will. They are great climbers and jumpers too. They will find a way on your roof if you allow them. The general fact is that you need to cut trees back 10 feet from the edge of the roof.

The next point is holes in the house. Siding, foundation, unplugged holes cut for mechanical, chimneys, and any other hole that needs plugging. Plug, caulk, and fill all imperfections and holes in your house!

Bait traps outside work well for rodents too. Just be sure to make sure you aren’t killing the domesticated animals in your neighborhood.

What to do indoors for mice

Once mice are indoors, it is difficult to get them all. You need to find out how they entered and block that prior to attacking the inside.

If you feel you have made the outdoors secure, then on the inside you can use traps. Another idea is mice dislike peppermint so use lots of essential oils in the attic and basement. The last, and most important, thing, I believe is spraying the rim joist of every house. The rim joist is the area between your foundation and your first level. Typically builders stuff insulation there and mice just love that! They now have a warm condo where they can assault your kitchen. Do yourself a favor and spray foam your rim joist in your house.
